The best gig ever is up for grab from adidas golf

Imagine for a second you are offered a job to travel the world in the name of golf. No, this isn’t some sort of fairy tale, it is an opportunity adidas golf has given two young men in hopes of finding the right man for the job in a contest they’re calling "Wear in the World Adventure2."

Steve Olsen of Green Bay, Wis., and Chris Dukeminier of Portland, Ore., are the two lucky gents that will be vying for a job with adidas golf as its social media catalyst.

Basically, these two guys will travel to nine countries over 50 days to try and do the best social media available in hopes of landing a job with one of the leading golf companies in the world. They began their travels last week.

How are they doing this? By utilizing Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. You can follow along with the adventure right here, as they attempt to beat the other one out.

Kenny Perry to donate $2,000 a birdie to families of fallen miners

When you talk about the good guys on the PGA Tour, a lot of the same names come up in conversation. One of those is Kenny Perry, the 14-time PGA Tour champion and runner-up at the 2009 Masters.

Next month, at the Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., Perry will do something pretty incredible. As reported by AP, for every birdie he makes in the event, Perry will donate a solid $2,000 to a charity set up to help out the families of the 25 fallen miners that died on April 5.

Those men were part of the worst U.S. coal disaster in 40 years, and Perry will be using his fame to help bring some support to the families that are struggling with the loss of loved ones.

How much of an affect has his decision already made on the tournament? Resort host Jim Justice said he’d match the final sum of Perry, doubling the amount the families will receive from the PGA Tour event.

You have to love things like this from a guy like Perry. Not only has he set up a scholarship fund at Lipscomb University, but he actually enjoys doing things like this "bucks for birdies" next month.

Sweet video: Annika Sorenstam blasting balls off a skyscraper

About this time last year, Briny Baird stepped up to the edge of a San Diego skyscraper and launched balls into Petco Park far, far below. It was part of a promotion by P.F. Chang’s to win the entire nation free lettuce wraps. Thanks, Briny!

One year later and we’ve got Annika Sorenstam and Baird atop Waterside Plaza, a skyscraper overlooking the East River in New York City. If she could drop one of her shots onto a floating target, hey — more free food! Did she do it? Watch and see …

Woo-hoo! Let’s eat!

Anyway, this wasn’t just about stuffing America’s face with Chinese food. PF Chang’s also donated $100,000 to Intrepid Fallen Heroes as part of the stunt. Don Vickery, a veteran and the only double-amputee Class A member of the PGA of America, also joined in the fun.

Congrats to Annika, Briny, Don and PF Chang’s. Now, where’s my food? (Click here to find out how to get your eats.)

Martin Kaymer dons Germany’s soccer jersey for one hole

Everybody’s loving the World Cup these days, and our professional golfers are no exception. Martin Kaymer (the one with the golf club) is a fan of Lukas Podolski (the one with the soccer ball) and the rest of the German team, and on Sunday at the BMW International Open, Kaymer donned a German jersey for his final hole.

Wait a minute — a golfer wearing a (gasp!) soccer jersey! What a breach of etiquette! A travesty! Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know how well this would have gone over in, say, Augusta. Kaymer would be looking at a fine and several disapproving glances from golf’s tweedy elite for daring to bring such a base display of fandom into the green cathedral. What’s next, vuvuzelas in the backswing?

Fortunately for Kaymer, however, the BMW was being played in Germany. So, free pass! "In the spirit of the day it’s no problem," tournament director
Mike Stewart said afterward, "but I’ve reminded him he shouldn’t be wearing football
shirts."

Perhaps inspired by Kaymer, Sergio Garcia flopped on four different holes, but was unable to draw a yellow card.

Pate’s perspective: Sizing up the AT&T National’s Aronimink

Jerry Pate
knows golf. He’s got eight wins on the PGA Tour, including the 1976
U.S. Open, and he’s an accomplished course designer. Throughout the
season, he’ll be stopping by Devil Ball to offer an inside-the-ropes
look at the week’s upcoming course. Today: Aronomink, site of this week’s AT&T National.

"There is no such thing as a misplaced bunker. Regardless of where a bunker may be, it is the business of the player to avoid it." — Donald Ross

Aronimink is a fabulous Donald Ross layout that opened in 1928. Although it has not had the notoriety of other Ross courses such as Pinehurst, Seminole, or Oakland Hills, it truly is their equal. Even Donald Ross himself wrote that he had intended Aronimink to be his masterpiece.

The outstanding features of this layout are most certainly the bunkers. The layout is littered with over seventy of them, and throughout the duration of a 72-hole event every one of them makes an impact at some point. The fairway bunkers at Aronimink don’t just protect on inside corner or define the target line, they pinch the landing areas and approaches to demand accuracy from the tee. The greenside bunkers front each green, allowing little room for a running approach. As a result, the golfer is prodded into challenging the fairway bunkers for a chance at an aggressive approach to the pin.

Once captured by one of these bunkers, the golfer must be careful not to compound his errors. Nearly all the bunkers sit perpendicular to the line of recovery, which makes the height of the bunker faces stare directly at the player’s next shot. A player going for too much on the recovery can easily hit the face in front of him or place his shot into the next bunker, placed precisely down the fairway to punish overzealous recovery attempts.

I am excited that the AT&T is visiting Aronimink. It will be refreshing to watch a Tour event where course management, accuracy, and patience will prevail over distance and aggression.
