House votes to give Jack Nicklaus the Congressional Gold Medal

As if he doesn’t have enough honors, Jack Nicklaus can now add another: The House has voted to grant the golfing legend the Congressional Gold Medal.

Nicklaus was recognized for his golfing achievements (it’s true, he did win a lot) and his charitable work; he has raised more than $12 million for pediatric health services through the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. He can hang the medal next to his Congressional Medal of Freedom, which he was awarded there at right by President Bush in 2005.

The last recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal, given to prominent public figures and public servants, were Japanese-American World War II vets. Arnold Palmer won the award in 2009. (He got in one more victory on Jack!)

The legislation now heads to the Senate. Forget campaign finance reform and health care; this is a bill that needs to pass, now! Tip to Nicklaus’ people: don’t be surprised if you start receiving a lot of inquiries from the 202 area code asking to play a round with the Golden Bear.

High school golfers card aces on same hole by bouncing ball off cart path

We’ve seen some incredible hole-in-one stories over the last nine months. There was Daniel Chopra carding two aces in the same round at Pebble Beach, a 12-year-old recording two in nine holes, and an amateur golfer holing out from the tee on a par-4. But the story you’re about to hear … well, let’s just say the hole-in-one bar has been raised.

We have North Dakota high school golfers Collin Larson and Brandon Winter to thank for upping the ante on ridiculous hole-in-one stories. Playing a high school qualifying round at Rose Creek Golf Course, the freshmen golfers had no idea the 140-yard, par-3 fourth hole would be the site of an incredibly crazy feat.

How crazy was the feat, you ask? How about two holes-in-one on the same hole, same day, using the same club (9-iron) … while also bouncing the ball off the cart path. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up.

Via the West Central Tribune:

The coincidence of Winter’s and Larson’s shots both falling is almost too much to believe, but there was another common thread between the pair of aces.

Both Winter and Larson almost had identical shots. Each golfer had their shots go short and bounce off the cart path onto the green before finding the bottom of the cup.

“When I saw it bounce up and start rolling, I was just hoping I would get close,” Larson said. “Then when it dropped in, I couldn’t believe it.”

The odds of two members of the same foursome acing the same hole is roughly 17 million-to-1, so this feat is clearly a one-in-a-million occurrence. But when you add in both bouncing the ball off the cart path for the ace, you’d have to figure the odds would skyrocket.

Seriously, if I were the parents of these kids, I’d consider going out and buying a couple lottery tickets. Talk about a couple of insanely lucky boys.

Rory McIlroy does the ‘Happy Gilmore,’ and more pro trick shots

Admit it, you’d like to see if your favorite golf pros could pull off the kind of goofy trick shots you practice with your pals while you’re waiting for those slow-playing morons to hole out. Well, guess what: not only can the pros do those trick shots, they can do ‘em better than you could imagine. Check out Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and many others rocking their Titleists (and Callaways, and Srixons, and so on) with some trick-shot goofiness.

Devil Ball Proving Ground: Nike’s VR_S woods, Method Concept putter

Welcome to Devil Ball’s Proving Ground, where we put the latest golf equipment through its paces. Today we take a look at Nike’s VR_S woods, and the Method putter.

Tester — Jonathan Wall — Handicap: 2.7

Target Golf Audience — All Players

You rarely see the words “Nike” and “underrated” together. When you produce neon yellow uniforms for the University of Oregon and some out-of-this-world shoes, you expect a level of fanfare to come along with your products.

But for one reason or another, Nike’s golf club line has, for the most part, flown under the radar over the years … until now. The Nike VR_S line (we had a chance to try out the driver, 3-wood and hybrid) may have a stealth look to them with the muted grays and silvers, but when we put these clubs to the test, they certainly made a loud (and proud) statement.

Initial Thought

One of the knocks on Nike’s woods in the past (especially the driver) was that the clubs were too loud. Some of my friends used to comment that it sounded like you were hitting an aluminum bat when it came off the face. It appears the engineers heard the complaints and found a way to get rid of the “ping” sound, because this year’s VR_S driver sounds incredibly solid off the face.

That’s a huge improvement after years of trying out Nike drivers and being frustrated with the lack of feedback I received from mishits. A big reason for the improvement in sound and feedback is due in large part to the new “NexCOR” face technology — thickest in the middle and tapered toward the perimeter – that’s designed to increase ball speed over a large area of the face.

The ball rocketed off the driver, and the trajectory didn’t seem to balloon on me. There was a penetrating ball flight that started with the driver and went right on down through the 3-wood and hybrid.

The grays and silvers, with a hint of VR red, give these clubs a clean look. I know some enjoyed the yellow in Nike’s previous line, but these sticks scream class. You don’t need to be flashy to get your point across — especially when the clubs speak for themselves.

Transitioning and Playability

Like a number of clubs on the market today, the VR_S driver uses the STR8-Fit technology to give golfers a number of different face angles. With eight settings from 2 degrees open to 2 degrees closed, you can use the wrench to make a host of changes to your driver.

Whether you really need the adjustable setting or not, it’s nice to know you have the option to switch things up if you have a bad round. Even better? Nike decided to scale down the hosel area on the club which, if you’ll recall, was incredibly busy and bulky in previous versions. Needless to say, this was an update that needed to be made.

All three clubs I received came with the Fubuki K-series (X-flex) shaft, which was a tad bit light for my taste (when you use a 71 gram shaft, everything feels like a twig). But after taking it through a lengthy range session, I noticed my ball speed and swing speed started to increase.

Even though it felt like I was swinging a feather in the beginning, Nike clearly knew what they were doing when they decided to lighten things up.

Mis-hits on this club were almost non-existent, which is great news if you’re a weekend golfer. I hit a few off the toe and the heel just to get a sense of how the ball flew and was amazed how the “NexCOR” technology masked the mis-hits. Even if you have an off day, it’s nice to know your driver won’t give you a sense that the wheels are falling off.

Final Verdict

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the entire VR_S line. All three clubs performed at an extremely high level — especially the 3-wood, a sneaky long stick that could be one of the best on the market — on the range and the course, to the point where I would have been fine putting them in the bag for a money game with my buddies.

I’ve rarely given Nike clubs a look in the past, but after trying out the entire line, I’ll definitely give them a spin in the future.

Price — $299 (driver) / $199 (3-wood) / $169 (hybrid)

Nike Method putter

Tester — Jonathan Wall — Handicap: 2.7

Target Golf Audience — All Players

Initial Thought

Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat: The Method Concept doesn’t look like your conventional putter. When I pulled this model out of the box, I had to do a double-take at the design. Nike makes a number of conventional flatsticks, but this futuristic version looked like something we’ll all be using when golf is played on the moon.

At first, I questioned if the putter had gotten knocked around in transit. Surely a company wouldn’t throw a odd-shaped black bar on the back that looked out of place. But as I later found out, the bar (as well as the entire design) was put there for a reason.

Transitioning and Playability

Nike certainly isn’t the first to design a hybrid putter that takes the best parts from the blade and the mallet, but it’s safe to nobody thought of putting together a futuristic design that turns heads on the green.

Built with a 90 gram putter face and 200 gram body, the combination of the two give the Method Concept a very high MOI that allows the putter to perform with the stability of a large mallet, while still keeping a lot of the same characteristics of the blade putter.

The lightweight aluminum face and heavy stainless steel body position the center of gravity towards the back in the head and lower to the sole, giving you a truer roll off the face.

Once you get past the funky design, you’ll start to notice this putter can roll the rock.

Final Verdict

The Method Concept is a great putter, but for the traditionalists out there, it may be hard to get past the red and black colors and radical design. I’ll admit it took some getting used for who’s used the same putter model since 1997, but there’s something about this putter that draws you in.

Price — $239

Want to live like Bubba Watson? Now you can for $1.49 million

Most of us will never be able to hit the ball “Bubba-long” or drive General Lee to the office, but if you have $1.49 million lying around the house, you can live like Bubba Watson.

The Masters champ put his Lexington, N.C., home up for sale, and unlike some of the multimillion-dollar homes we’ve highlighted on Devil Ball in the past, Watson’s home seems pretty reasonable compared to, say, Mickelson’s 9,500-square-foot abode.

Interested in purchasing the home? Here’s an idea of what you get: Located on High Rock Lake, the 3,400-square-foot lake house (with four bedrooms, 4.5 baths) sits on more than half an acre. The home has two kitchens, plus an exterior kitchen with a barbecue pit, outdoor TV and saltwater pool and hot tub.

But wait, there’s more! Aside from the sweet home amenities, the house also includes a boat house, dock, covered boat storage and double Jet Ski dock (make sure Dustin Johnson stays away from this part of the house).

No word yet if you get a ride in General Lee or a golf lesson, but if you’re willing to pay full boat for the house, you may as well ask and see if it’s possible. Knowing Bubba Watson, we’re pretty sure he’d be up for just about anything.

Compared to some of the ridiculously priced priced homes that athletes live in, this one seems like a steal at $1.49 million. I’m pretty sure if everyone kicked in $20, we could make a decent offer for Bubba’s pad. It’d make a sweet weekend retreat, don’t you think?

Welcome back to the winner’s circle, Carl Pettersson. Nice jacket.

Ruthless! Efficient! Carl Pettersson led off his final round with a birdie barrage, and didn’t let up until he ended up with a lovely tartan jacket and a five-shot victory at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links. You know, when you hear that you’ll win a jacket in April in a golf tournament, your mind probably goes in a certain direction, but still … this ain’t bad. Congrats to Carl. Now, on to Texas!

Five things we learned from the RBC Heritage

Let’s be honest, we’re all incredibly busy. Nobody has time to sit down and watch four rounds of golf coverage — unless, of course, you watch TV for a living, and if that’s the case, please email us your number. So in an effort to condense the tournament coverage for you into a few quick hits, here are five things we learned from the RBC Heritage

Carl Pettersson is on a roll — It’s funny how things can change in the blink of an eye. Just a week after Carl Pettersson missed his second consecutive cut of the season at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he showed up and posted a second-place finish at the Shell Houston Open. Despite missing out on the Masters, he kept the good vibes going two weeks later, winning for the fifth time in his PGA Tour career. Now 35th in the Official World Golf Ranking, the Swede is currently in the field for the 2013 Masters. And after another brilliant performance, finishing the week tops in putts per GIR and greens in regulation, there’s a good chance this could be the start of a nice run for Pettersson. And to think, all it took was missing two cuts to make it happen.

It’s time to put out an APB for Luke Donald’s putting stroke — We tend to take players like Luke Donald for granted. One of the most consistent golfers on tour, you just expect him to show up and post top 10′s. When you have one of the most pure putting strokes on tour, people just assume you’re going to contend. But over the last couple of weeks, Donald’s putter has gone ice cold. After averaging 1.61 putts (including four three-putts) at the Masters, things continued to go downhill at the RBC Heritage. Donald averaged 1.857 putts per GIR (tied for 69th in the field), a figure that seems unfathomable for one of the game’s best putters. It’s hard to tell where things went wrong for the No. 2-ranked player in the world, but something’s clearly off at the moment.

Harbour Town Golf Links wins the distance battle — As club manufacturers continue to produce clubs that make the ball go a country mile, courses have tried their best to combat the increase in distance by growing out the rough and adding an additional 400-500 yards in an effort to make things interesting. At just 7,101 yards, you’d think Harbour Town Golf Links, one of the shorter tracks on the PGA Tour, would get killed. But that doesn’t appear to be the case. Only 23 players in the field managed to break par for the week, and the course played over par all four days. With postage stamp greens and some of the narrowest fairways on tour, Harbour Town once again proved you don’t have to be 7,600 yards to give golfers a serious test.

Another strong week for Harris English — Georgia Bulldogs have been making some noise on the PGA Tour this year. One week after Bubba Watson won the Masters, rookie Harris English posted his fifth top 25 finish of the season with a T8 at the RBC Heritage. The 22-year-old has only missed two cuts all season and seems to be embracing the life of being a professional golfer. He may not win a tournament this year, but based on the level of consistency he’s produced, there’s a good chance we’ll see him in the winner’s circle in the future.

Chip shots — Zach Johnson never had a chance to win the RBC Heritage, but his second-place finish was his best showing since a T3 at last year’s John Deere Classic. … John Daly made his second consecutive cut on the PGA Tour, finishing the week T52. … Colt Knost’s third-place finish was the best of his PGA Tour career.

Caddie vs. gator! Who ya got?

Follow Jay Busbee on Twitter at @jaybusbee.

Look, let’s be honest: as great as Bubba Watson’s shot to win the Masters last week was, it wasn’t like the ball was going to, say, EAT him if he misplayed it.

The scene: the 15th hole of the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, S.C. Golfer Brian Gay was greenside, but he wasn’t alone … there was a freaking alligator right there with him. So Gay’s caddie Kip Henley stepped up and rousted the gator. (And, yes, insert obligatory “Happy Gilmore”/Chubbs reference here.)

Gay would go on to bogey the hole, which is really about the best-case scenario. Henley, for his part, just made the game of golf 25 percent cooler.

Bubba Watson. Augusta. The General Lee. You know you want to see it.

As you know, Bubba Watson just won the Masters. As you probably also know, Bubba Watson bought the very first General Lee from the “Dukes of Hazzard” TV show at auction. Here’s a (Photoshopped) look at what 2013 will hopefully bring at Augusta, courtesy of Bubba’s Twitter feed. Hey, if he can’t drive it at a NASCAR race, maybe he can wheel it up Magnolia Lane.

Make this happen, Bubba. You’re one of them now.

Video: Catch up with the first round of the RBC Heritage here

The RBC Heritage is underway, and catch up with all the events of the first round. Matt Kuchar, Zach Johnson, John Daly (really) and many others had some fine moments on Hilton Head island. But it was Chad Campbell, Colt Knost and Vaughn Taylor who snagged the early lead together. Play continues Friday and on into the weekend.
